Endoscopy

Dr Hazel Serrao-Brown, Endoscopy Services including Colonoscopy, Endoscope and others

Dr Hazel Serrao-Brown has professional GESA accreditation in Endoscopy to perform Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy (scope) is the examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract to diagnose, and in some cases, treat problems. Colonoscopy can detect polyps, inflamed tissues and cancers, such as colorectal cancer. It can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the bowel and weight loss.

Gastroscopy is a test procedure done using an endoscope, which is a long, thin, flexible tube with a ‘video camera’ at the tip. This tube is passed through the mouth into the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and first part of the small intestine.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy allows for direct visualisation of the entire colon and rectum. It is pivotal in detecting colonic polyps, inflammatory lesions, and colorectal carcinomas. During the procedure, polypectomies can be performed to excise adenomatous polyps, thereby reducing cancer risk.

.

Biopsies and Polypectomies

Endoscopic biopsies are conducted to obtain tissue samples from suspicious lesions for definitive diagnosis. Polypectomies involve the removal of polyps, which are often precancerous, serving both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy involves the insertion of a flexible endoscope through the oral cavity to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This procedure is essential for identifying mucosal abnormalities, ulcers, and neoplasms. It also facilitates targeted biopsies for histopathological evaluation.

.

Disaccharidase Testing

Disaccharidase activity assessment is typically conducted via mucosal biopsies obtained during gastroscopy. This evaluation is crucial for diagnosing enzyme deficiencies, such as lactase deficiency, which can lead to malabsorption syndromes.

Dr Hazel Serrao-Brown's expertise in endoscopic procedures ensures accurate diagnosis and effective management of gastrointestinal disorders, adhering to the highest standards of patient care.
